Prof Denis Aheto
Director (CCM-ACECoR)
Denis is the Director of the Centre for Coastal Management (CCM), Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR), where the West Africa Shellfish Hub is hosted. By extension, he acts as the administrative head of the Shellfish Hub. He is a Professor of Coastal Ecology and Interdisciplinary Sciences. Denis is Co-PI on UCC's sub-activities under both Phase I and Phase II of the Women Shellfishers and Food Security. -
Dr Isaac Okyere
Hub Coordinator
Isaac is the Coordinator of the West Africa Shellfish Hub. He is PI on the University of Cape Coast (UCC)'s sub-activities on Phase II Women Shellfishers and Food Security Project and a core team member of the Phase I WSFS. Isaac holds PhD and MPhil degrees in Fisheries Science and a BSc in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences from the UCC. He is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences at UCCC. -
Dr Eric Appiah Krampah
Hub Programmes Support Officer
Dr. Krampah is a research scientist, an aquatic resources sustainability enthusiast and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 14) advocate. He holds a PhD in Fisheries Science with specialisation in bivalve shellfish ecology and aquaculture. Additionally, he has strong background in small-scale fisheries management, finfish aquaculture, marine biology, coastal/ocean conservation, and possess high competency in quantitative data collection and analyses, and science communication. He is currently a Project Support Officer (West Africa Shellfish Knowledge and Outreach Hub) on the USAID-funded Women Shellfish and Food Security Project at the Centre for Coastal Management-Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (CCM-ACECoR) at the University of Cape Coast. He is also a freelance aquaculture consultant who has consulted for several fish farms and many potential fish farmers/investors within and outside Ghana. He is a recipient of the Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) 2021 Ocean Leadership Microgrant and the Africa Higher Education Centres of Excellence for Development Impact’s (ACE IMPACT) Students Innovation Research Award (SIRA) 2022, Second (2nd) Prize in the Agriculture Thematic Area, both for his research on laboratory production of West African mangrove oyster seed (larvae). -

Mr Allan Barku
Hub IT Support Officer
Allan is one of the Shellfish Hub's core IT development and communications support officers. He has a reputable portfolio of developing web resources of fisheries and coastal management projects at UCC, in Ghana, and in the West Africa region. Aside from the SHellfish Hub, Allan has been instrumental in developing web portals, including the Africa Union (AU-IBAR) Fisheries Database, Marine Mammal Conservation, COVID-19 and fisheries mapping, Marine Litter Network, GTEC ACE Impact website, among others. -
Mr Clemence Ayekple
Hub IT Support Officer
Clemence is one of the Shellfish Hub's core IT development and communications support officers. He has a reputable portfolio of developing web resources of fisheries and coastal management projects at UCC in Ghana and the West Africa region. Mr Ernest Chuku
Hub Deputy-Coordinator
Ernest is part of the International Technical Advisory team of the WA Shellfish Hub, providing remote assistance and technical backstopping to the Hub Coordinator in his capacity as supporting coordinator. He is a Co-PI on the UCC sub-activity of the Phase II Women Shellfishers and Food Security Project (WSFS) and was formerly the coordinator of UCC's sub-activity on Phase I of the WSFS. Ernest has an MPhil in Aquaculture with a specialisation in coastal/marine aquaculture and a BSc in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. He is presently a post-doctoral research fellow at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania, Australia. -
Ms Fatou Janha Mboob
Hub Advisory Board (Member) , Assoc. Director
Fatou is the Executive Director of TRY Oyster Women Association (TOWA), where she has devoted 90 per cent of her work to community organization and capacity development in human and natural (oyster & mangroves) resource management for the last twenty years. She has extensive experience in community development and natural resource management. Her recent activities include the implementation of Women Shellfishers and Food Security, USAID funded and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on oyster value chain and oyster aquaculture projects, as well as an Associate Partners on FAO (Climate Resilience Fishery Initiative for Livelihood Improvement in The Gambia (PROREFISH). -
Dr Karen Kent
Hub Advisory Board (Chair)
Karen is experienced in program design, management, and evaluation, including applied research and institutional capacity building. At the University of Rhode Island Coastal Resources Center, she leads and contributes to biodiversity conservation, livelihoods, food security, and resilience initiatives in West Africa, Madagascar, and globally. Karen’s work has facilitated gender mainstreaming and women’s empowerment outcomes in small-scale fisheries, including women-led rights-based shellfisheries co-management in The Gambia and Ghana and post-harvest value chains in Senegal. Karen lived and worked in Sub-Saharan Africa for 20 years at the village level as an aquaculture extension agent, international NGO Country Director, and at USAID. Karen is fluent in French. -
Ms Lauren Josephs
Hub Advisory Board (Member)
Lauren is a researcher with the Coastal Resources Centre, University of Rhode Island, working with the international team across multiple projects. Lauren has expertise in social-ecological systems, fisheries science and management, and the human dimensions of coastal management. Her professional interests are in working to help coastal communities build resilience and protect their connections to the ocean environment and its resources. Lauren earned a BS in marine biology from Northeastern University as an alum of the Three Seas Program and an interdisciplinary MS with the Humphries Lab at the University of Rhode Island focused on the human dimensions of shoreline management in New England. She is also Deputy Project Director for the Women Shellfishers and Food Security Project.
