Densu oyster pickers assoc. and UCC embark on bivalve shell value chain study tour in Ghana
By WA Shellfish Hub
As part of the learning on how the oyster harvesters could derive optimum benefit from the value addition of oyster shells, a bivalve shell value chain study tour facilitated by the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and Development Action Association (DAA) was organised on the 20th September 2023 for some selected members of the Densu Oyster Pickers Association (DOPA), comprising of eight women and two men.
The study tour group first visited the Volta clam landing site at Big Ada to familiarize themselves with the processing techniques of the Volta clam. From the landing site, the group proceeded to two small-scale clam shell processing facilities: Daniel B. Venture, located near Ada, and Al Rayan Sparkling Feed Ltd, located off Aveyime-Battor Road.
The study tour offered DOPA, DAA, and the UCC team members an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the processes, equipment, human resource requirements, and the economic viability of bivalve shell value addition.
The study tour group also visited the premises of Big Star Animal Feed Ltd, a large-scale animal feed manufacturer in Tema, to leverage opportunities to foster oyster shell marketing collaboration with the company.
