Narkwa Oyster Fishery Co-management Committee Workshop on Co-Management Planning

By WA Shellfish Hub

The Narkwa oyster fishery co-management committee recently convened to propel forward the intricate planning process of cooperative management of the oyster fishery at Ekumfi Narkwa. Building upon the momentum generated during the initial stakeholders’ engagement workshop, where boundaries for the oyster fishery management area were delineated, in-depth stakeholder analyses was carried out and a formidable co-management planning committee was established, this latest gathering marked a significant milestone in the journey towards sustainable resource management.

Facilitated by the West Africa Shellfish Hub at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the Development Action Association (DAA), the two-day workshop unfolded, on the 26th and 27th September, 2023, as a forum for strategic planning. With a shared commitment to fostering ecosystem-based adaptive collaborative management, akin to the successful model employed in the Densu Delta oyster fishery co-management plan, the committee embarked on the arduous task of outlining a collective vision and purpose.

Through spirited deliberations and meticulous analysis, the committee crafted a comprehensive set of goals and objectives designed to guide the collective efforts towards sustainable fishery resource utilisation. Drawing from the rich local knowledge and available scientific data on the oyster fishery, management measures were tailored to suit the unique ecological nuances of the Narkwa oyster fishery, ensuring a balance between conservation imperatives and socio-economic considerations.

As the workshop drew to a close on its second day, the committee turned its attention to the critical task of enforcing compliance within the co-management framework. With a firm resolve to uphold the integrity of the fishery and safeguard its long-term viability, penalties and sanctions were thoughtfully crafted to deter potential violations and reinforce the shared commitment to responsible stewardship.
