Oyster harvesters graduate in literacy and numeracy
By WA Shellfish Hub
A graduation ceremony was held on September 25, 2023 for women shellfish harvesters who had completed their first literacy and numeracy training batch.
The activity is among the scheduled events under the Women Shellfishers and Food Security Project to build the capacities of women shellfisher groups in West Africa towards sustainable management of shellfisheries and connected ecosystems in the sub-region.
It was coordinated by the Development Action Association (DAA). DAA facilitated leadership training for advocacy for Densu Oyster Pickers Association (DOPA) members and training on numeracy and literacy. In support of these activities, a team from the University of Cape Coast participated in the closing ceremony of the training on September 25, 2023.

At the ceremony, the DOPA trainees demonstrated the literacy skills they had acquired by writing and spelling their names and other words and reading textbooks in the local languages. The participants also demonstrated their numeracy skills by performing arithmetic operations, mainly adding numbers from two to four digits.
